The human body has much beauty and elegance. I based my concentration on this structure and our relationship to it. It was important to me to capture how the skin sets upon the form and one’s acceptance of this. As the body moves, one gets different curves and folds in the skin. Capturing these curves and the stress of maintaining a perfect body were my goals. Learning to accept the beauty of one’s body structure and the transition to that acceptance is what I wanted to reflect in my series.
Through this concentration I wanted to show parts that make up the whole and also the beauty of the flowing lines of the human form. The hands, stomach, shoulder, and hips are what reflect the flowing lines and the curves of the structure. We all have them but rarely notice their beauty. Some people may not like the curves of their body and have problems accepting their image. They become caught up in anxiety and stress in the attempt to be perfect. This angst and tension is portrayed through strain in the body and the tightening of the muscles. As seen in image # 2 the tightly griped hands show a sense of emotion and anger. In image # 6, the hand griping the neck reflects the stress of not being comfortable with one’s body. The hands are seen in different perspectives throughout the series and gradually began to relax.
Black backgrounds of all the images highlight the body without distractions so one can solely focus on the lines in the body. As one transitions from the grasping angst of the hand to the gentle curves of the body form as shown in the very simplistic abstraction of image # 12, hopefully the viewer can see the beauty and power in acceptance of one’s body.
